At Capalique, the health and well-being of our dogs and puppies is our top priority. We are committed to ethical, responsible breeding, and this begins with rigorous health and genetic testing for all of our breeding dogs. Our goal is to produce puppies that are healthy, well-adjusted, and ready for a lifetime of happiness with their families.

 

Below are the key health conditions we test for and monitor in our English Cocker Spaniels:

 

 

Genetic & Inherited Conditions

 

• Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA): Degenerative eye disease leading to vision loss. DNA testing ensures carriers are not bred together.

• Familial Nephropathy (FN): Inherited kidney disorder that can cause early renal failure.

• Adult Onset Neuropathy (AON): Progressive neurological weakness, typically affecting the hind limbs.

• Acral Mutilation Syndrome (AMS): Rare condition causing loss of pain sensation, leading to self-injury of paws.

• Exercise-Induced Collapse (EIC): Neuromuscular disorder causing weakness after strenuous activity.

• Phosphofructokinase (PFK) Deficiency: Enzyme deficiency affecting energy metabolism, can cause weakness and anemia.

• Xanthinuria: Alters metabolism and may lead to urinary stones.

Eye & Ear Conditions

 

• Cataracts, Glaucoma, Distichiasis: Various eye conditions that may impair vision.

• Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (Dry Eye): Reduced tear production leading to irritation.

• Ear Infections (Otitis): Common due to pendulous ears; early care and hygiene prevent recurring issues.

 

 

Blood & Immune System Conditions

 

• Von Willebrand’s Disease: Inherited clotting deficiency.

• Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA): Autoimmune destruction of red blood cells (rare but monitored).
